Miki Yui: Traccia / Trace
In a personal and innovative way, Miki Yui represents an attitude which, however, isn't new in the history of the arts (among others, we could cite the cases of Cage and Beuys and the aesthetics of Fluxus in general) for working led by a vision of reality as a complex entity, made up of heterogeneous and contemporary, or even simultaneous, phenomena, to experience only through the use of all the sensorial faculties. Born in Tokyo in 1971, this artist, composer and performer has been living in Germany for some years, mainly in Düsseldorf, where she studied at the prestigious Kunstakademie, and in Cologne, where she first seriously started working with sounds (small sounds, as she calls them). Lastly, she has accentuated the more visual aspects of her research, which by now is characterized by the use of diverse – yet complementary – ‘media’ such as sound itself, drawing, the written word, silence...
Yui turns to reality with a looking/listening that tends to tune into each and every aspect, visible and invisible, and thus her work succeeds in including both the temporal dimension of expectation and that of memory, creating a space of apperception in which these elements blend together naturally.
Beyond her three CDs, the artist has been brought to international attention in 2002 for being included (the youngest of all the participants) in the important group show Resonanzen - curated by Bernnd Schulz - at Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken, along with renowned talents such as Rolf Julius, Christina Kubisch, Bernhard Leitner, and other young artists on the rise like Steve Roden and Ed Osborne.
Miki Yui now presents at e/static her first real solo show, which will include a sound installation and a series of drawings, both works created expressly for this occasion.
