Boredom often serves a useful function: as an opposite to excitement and as a means of bringing emphasis to what it interrupts, causing us to view both elements freshly. It is a necessary station on the way to other experiences.

(Dick Higgins, from “Boredom and Danger”, 1968)

If sleep is the apogee of physical relaxation, boredom is the apogee of mental relaxation. Boredom is the dream bird that hatches the egg of experience.

(Walter Benjamin, from “The storyteller. Reflections on the work of Nikolaj Leskov”, translated by Heathwood, 2013)
